Creating a Supportive Space for PTSD Awareness 1
Did you know that there is a thing called PTSD radio? I did not. So, I looked it up. It seems that someone wrote a very disappointing and chilling series of horror stories and so the site is very misleading. There is no support for survivors at PTSD radio.
There is also something called PTSD lyrics. I didn’t this know either. PTSD lyrics? Does someone actually sing about other peoples’ distress? So, I looked it up. It is a set of lyrics to a song about a guy with a war zone in his head. No support there either since PTSD lyrics just describe one guy’s nasty experiences in song. It was not a war but a war zone – I believe in his own neighbourhood. Something his gang created there, against the police and regular citizens. He will never seek the supportive space I am trying to provide here. PTSD lyrics is useless.
PTSD radio and PTSD lyrics – WOW, do not waste your time seeking comfort there.
Instead, access my blog which is attached to my webpage for my memoir, Adytum by Mary Cools. The memoir is the story of my life dealing with generational PTSD. My blog is where I publish information about PTSD, where to seek help and how to try to deal with your triggers and stresses. Your symptoms probably need some professional attention if they are severe at times and I also provide where to find that professional help. That place is not at PTSD radio or with PTSD lyrics.
I am creating a supportive space for anyone who is a survivor of trauma. And all of my sources are sound: The Horsham Clinic in Philadelphia, Pa and The WHO articles about mental health care after trauma are only two of my sources. These institutions are run by professionals and offer endless opportunities for professional or self- help. Please visit these other sites for information.
THERAPY AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT for TRAUMA SURVIVORS:
Please understand that I am only creating a space for your comfort and information. Because, professional therapy is a crucial part of becoming able to manage PTSD triggers.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of professional therapy that can help you alter your thought patterns to such a degree that you may become able to avoid harmful behaviours or emotions. Doesn't that sound comforting?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is another form of therapy which is proven effective for some survivors with PTSD. This process involves remembering traumatic events while receiving side-to-side eye movements, hand tapping, or auditory tones. Very interesting and innovative therapy, right?
Remember, only medical professionals can provide you with the tools and strategies mentioned above. But, you CAN learn to manage your PTSD triggers in time.
ALWAYS REMEMBER: If you or someone you know is in crisis, having thoughts of suicide or needs a safe place to talk, you can call 988.
988 is the number to call if someone is worried about a person they know OR if you yourself are thinking about suicide.
Call or text 988 for toll free help without judgement. Support can be accessed in English or in French.
